'Served:' Bridgeport Native's Film On Prison To Premiere In Norwalk

NORWALK, Conn. — A former Bridgeport resident will be on hand May 15 for the world premiere of her short film “Served,” which tackles the effects of incarceration on prisoners’ children and families, a situation she knows all too well.

Writer/producer Akiya McKnight brings her new film "Served" to Norwalk's Garden Cinema on May 15.

Akiya McKnight wrote and produced the film, which will be screened at 7 p.m. at Garden Cinema on Isaac Place.

“I wanted to be the voice of the 2.7 million children with parents incarcerated, who are often ignored and dismissed due to the mistakes of their parents,” said McKnight, who now lives in Atlanta. “I knew what that felt like because I am a child of two formerly incarcerated parents.”

“Served” follows the lives of Heart and Hope, two adolescent sisters who must learn to navigate through life after their mother, Reena, is arrested and prepares to serve her sentence.

Visionarher Productions will be hosting the Norwalk screening of the film, directed by fellow Connecticut native Naomi Santiago. The film stars J.D. Williams of “The Wire” and “Oz.”

Bre Scullark, a mass incarceration activist, will host and be on hand for a post-screening Q&A with some of the cast and crew.
