“Ernie Fournier was diagnosed with ALS two years ago: I ride for him, his love of life, his optimistic spirit and for a cure!” says Joy, who will take part in the three-day Tri-State Trek next month.
This will be Joy’s first trek, and she plans to ride 270 miles total and take part all three days of the event..
Her goal is to raise $2,000. On her fundraising page, Joy says, "Riding for a cure for an amazing friend."

Beginning Friday, June 23, participants in the 15th annual Tri-State Trek will take off from Boston College in Massachusetts and ride 100 miles a day to finish in Greenwich on Sunday, June 25.
All proceeds benefit the ALS Therapy Development Institute in Cambridge, Mass., who are working to develop treatments for ALS. Last year, over 270 riders took part in the Tri-State Trek and raised over $800,000 for ALS research.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes muscle weakness, paralysis, and ultimately, respiratory failure. ALS robs people of their ability to walk, move, and speak, but keeps the mind intact. About 30,000 people in the U.S. are living with ALS, and most survive only two to five years following his or her diagnosis. Currently, there is no cure or effective treatment for this disease.
Joy’s participation in the Tri-State Trek not only helps raise awareness for ALS, but also the funds for research necessary to develop effective treatments. To date, the event has raised almost $9 million for the ALS Therapy Development Institute, the world’s first and largest nonprofit biotech focused 100 percent on ALS research.
