SHERMAN, Conn. — The Sherman Historical Society has awarded its Gloria Thorne Scholarships to two town college students in recognition of their work for the town nonprofit.

The scholarship is awarded to a high school graduate or college student who has contributed to the activities of the Sherman Historical Society and has maintained a good academic standing. This year, two deserving students were honored.

Anika K. Berger, daughter of Suzette and Michael Berger, along with Daniel M. Taylor, son of Joan and Joe Taylor, were chosen as the 2015 recipients.

Anika was a counselor-in-training for two summers with the Kids @ Cobbler Shop Program as well as a counselor for two additional years. She is now attending Clark University in Worcester, Mass., where she is majoring in international development and social change.

Daniel worked closely under the guidance of the late Tom Joyner, the historical society’s property manager, on various volunteer projects such as cleaning and organizing the Old Store basement, scraping and painting the Old Store porch, as well as several other maintenance projects where Tom needed assistance. Daniel is attending Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, pursuing a bachelor of science degree and looking forward to a career in the medical community.
