Bridgeport Diocese Settles Sexual Abuse Lawsuits Against Priests

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- The Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgeport has settled five lawsuits brought against it claiming that four priests had sexually abused children in Bridgeport, Norwalk, New Milford, Fairfield, Greenwich and Danbury, according to the Connecticut Post.

The abuses were reported to have taken place in the 1970s and 1980s, according to the Connecticut Post. The Connecticut Post reported that the lawsuits accused Rev. Martin Federici, Rev. Walter Coleman, Rev. James Gildea and Rev. Robert Morrissey. 

The lawsuits claimed that abuses occurred at St. Patrick's Church in Bridgeport, St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Norwalk, St. Edward the Confessor Church in New Milford, Notre Dame High School in Fairfield, St. Mary's High School in Greenwich, and retreats in Danbury, according to the Connecticut Post.

The five men suing the diocese were represented by the firm Tremont Sheldon Robinson Mahoney, who have brought dozens of suits against the diocese claiming, abuse by 29 priests, according to the Connecticut Post. These suits have resulted in $20 million in settlements, the Connecticut Post reported.

The amount that will be paid in the most recent settlements was not disclosed, but the Connecticut Post reported that the plaintiffs had been seeking millions of dollars.
