First Big Storm Dumps Snow Across Connecticut, Causes Huge Traffic Pileup

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — The first major storm of the season moved through Fairfield County on Saturday, dropping a measurable amount of snow and causing travel difficulties.

But conditions in Fairfield County did not compare to the eastern part of Connecticut, where the effects of the snowstorm were far worse. 

In Middletown, I-91 southbound was shut down near Exit 21 for about seven hours after a massive crash. The pileup involved at least 20 cars, three tractor-trailers and a tanker, state police said. No serious injuries were reported, but it took hours to clear the highway, state police said.

  • Beacon Falls: 4.3 inches
  • New Haven: 4.0 inches
  • Southbury: 3.5 inches

On Sunday, there is a 20 percent chance of snow showers after 10 a.m., with areas of blowing snow after 4 p.m. in Fairfield County. It will be partly sunny, with a high near 21. 

Temperatures will plunge into the single digits on Sunday night, with a low around 8. 

Monday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 25 degrees. A chance of snow returns Tuesday afternoon, turning to rain in late afternoon. It will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 38 degrees. The chance of precipitation is 30 percent.
