Mario J. Luis, 51, Sherman Volunteer Firefighter

SHERMAN, Conn. — Mario J. Luis of Sherman died on Wednesday, Sept. 14, as a result of a motorcycle accident in New Fairfield. He was 51.

Luis was born in Portugal, April 9, 1965, the son of Antonio and Aida (Nunes) Luis of Portugal. 

He came to the United States in 1970, living in Danbury, where he married Victoria Morgan on Aug. 19, 1989. They moved to Sherman in 2006.

He was a draftsman with Hudson Machine Works in Brewster, N.Y. An active member of the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department, he was named 2015 firefighter of the year. He was also a member of the First Congregational Church of Kent.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by a son, Justin Luis and his wife Miranda of Brookfield, two daughters, Kristina Luis and Alyssa Luis both of Sherman, a brother Glenn Luis of Portugal, granddaughter Bailey Luis and mother-in-law Doreen Ackell of New Milford.

A memorial service will take place Sunday, Sept. 18, at 3 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Kent, 97 N. Main St., Kent.
