DANBURY, Conn. — Firefighters came to the rescue of a worker who suffered a head injury Thursday morning at a home construction site in Danbury on Candlewood Lake.

With the help of a local tree company, firefighters set up a rope system and basket to pull the worker from the basement of the home under construction on Forty Acre Mountain Road, fire department spokesman James Gagliardo said in a statement.

A 911 call came in at 9 a.m. Engine Company 24 was dispatched along with City Of Danbury EMS to the scene, Gagliardo said.

The accident was due to the malfunction of a boom on a concrete pump truck, which struck the worker in the head, Gagliardo said.

Because of the difficult terrain on the construction site, they summoned additional help from Squad Company 1 and Engine Company 23, he said.

Deputy Chief Bernie Meehan, today’s shift commander, arrived on scene and supervised the rescue.

Fire units used a rope system and a stokes basket to bring the patient up the snow-covered bank to the awaiting ambulance, which transported the worker to the Emergency Department at Danbury Hospital, he said.

Advanced Tree Removal helped the first responders and loaned their rope hoisting system to facilitate the rescue, Gagliardo said.

"Tree companies are well-versed in rope systems as they utilize them on large trees regularly," Gagliardo said.

"OSHA is on scene investigating due to the nature of the incident on a construction site."
