The callers inform the companies that they will shut off their electricity immediately if they do not make a payment over the phone, police said.

Police are reminding companies and residents that Eversource representatives never ask for instant payment over the phone or in person. They also do not require the use of prepaid debit cards such as Green Dot MoneyPak, Vanilla or Reloadit.

Customers who are scheduled for disconnection due to nonpayment will receive a written notice via the mail, which includes the actions they can take to maintain service.

Residents who receive a phone call should hang up and contact Eversource Electric directly at (800) 286-2000.
