Female Swimmer Dies From Injuries Suffered In Candlewood Lake Accident

A 38-year-old woman involved in a boating accident on Squantz Pond in New Fairfield has died from her injuries.

Wanda Tirado of Waterbury, a swimmer from a boat, was hit around 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at Squantz Pond on Candlewood Lake and suffered critical injuries, said Chris Collibee, with the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Tirado died around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday from the injuries sustained, Collibee said.

After being injured, Tirado was rescued from the water by a Good Samaritan vessel and transported to Danbury Hospital, Collibee said.

During the course of the investigation into the incident, State EnCon Police identified an evading vessel in which she was a passenger that left the scene.

The operator Gary Morrone, 65, from Oakville was arrested by EnCon Police for the following violations; Reckless operation of a vessel, failure to help a collision victim, and failure to immediately notify law enforcement of injury. 

 The accident is currently under investigation by the State EnCon Police’s Boating Accident Investigation Unit (BARU). 

Morrone was released on a $10,000 bond with a court date of July 3.
