Several incidents have been reported, and the most recent occurred between 2 and 6 a.m. Friday on Pocono Road, police said. One car was stolen and valuables were taken from several others, according to police. Each of the vehicles was left unlocked, and the one stolen was unlocked with the keys inside, police said.

Authorities offered several tips for car owners to abide by while officers investigate the rash of incidents.

  • Lock your vehicle: Cars left unlocked are often targeted out of convenience. In addition to locking doors, all windows should be rolled up.
  • Remove all valuables from your vehicle: If you have to leave items in the car, put them out of sight or in the trunk. Personal items should always be brought in at the end of the night. Valuables -- particularly laptops, GPS units, music players and cellphones -- should never be left visible.
  • Park in a well-lit area: Thieves often operate under the the cover of darkness. When parking at night, always take steps to park where there is plenty of light. Motion-activated lights are also a great deterrent and should be installed in your driveway.
  • Avoid parking on the street if possible: This will help to reduce the opportunity for thieves to access your vehicle.
  • Report all suspicious activity: If you see a crime in progress or witness something suspicious, call the Newtown Police Department immediately at 203-426-5841. Take notes of any suspicious activity, such as clothing descriptions, vehicle make/color/license plate and direction of travel. Give all this information to the police officer answering the call. In the case of an emergency, call 911.

Anyone with any information about Friday's thefts is asked to call Newtown police at 203-426-5841.
