Police Seek To ID Driver Killed In Fiery Crash Of Pickup In New Fairfield

NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. — State police were still working Monday to identify the driver killed in the fiery crash of a pickup truck early Sunday in New Fairfield. 

The fatal crash occurred on Route 39, just past the center of New Fairfield but before Candlewood Lake.

The accident happened at about 12:50 a.m. Sunday at 85 Route 39, state police said. 

The pickup was traveling south when the driver lost control and the truck slammed into a utility pole and burst into flames, state police said. The accident occurred at Saw Mill Road near the ICONS Sports Bar, state police said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said. The driver's identity is unknown and pending further investigation, police said. 

The passenger, a 45-year-old man from Rochester, N.Y., was taken by New Fairfield EMS to Danbury Hospital with serious injuries, state police said. 

The pickup truck had New York plates.

Route 39 was closed until about 4 p.m. Sunday due to the fatal crash, First Selectman Susan Chapman said. The road had been closed at Saw Mill Road since the accident overnight and into the afternoon on Sunday. 

State police were continuing to investigate the crash and did not release any further details.
