The accident happened at about 12:50 a.m. Sunday at 85 Route 39, state police said.

The pickup was traveling south when the driver lost control and the truck slammed into a utility pole and burst into flames, state police said. The accident occurred at Saw Mill Road near the ICONS Sports Bar, state police said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said. The driver's identity is unknown and pending further investigation, police said.

The passenger, a 45-year-old man from Rochester, N.Y., was taken by New Fairfield EMS to Danbury Hospital with serious injuries, state police said.

The pickup truck had New York plates.
