According to Stamford Police, the story began in Milford on Sunday when a Stamford man, David Ferguson, 50, was driving along I-95 with his girlfriend when they spotted her stolen white 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The couple began following/chasing the Jeep until they reached the Exit 7 off-ramp in Stamford and the vehicle ran out of gas, said Stamford Police Sgt. Brian Butler.

Butler said that's when the woman jumped out of the car and began walking toward the Jeep which was being driven by Marquis Green, 26, of Bridgeport.

Green, who knows the woman, told officers he got out of the Jeep along with his cousin and tried to hand her the keys, Butler said.

That's when Green heard and saw the Ford Crown Victoria driven by Ferguson aiming right for him.

Green said he tried to run away, but was struck from behind by the vehicle, but kept running, with his cousin, until he reached the Town Center mall, Butler said.

Ferguson told police a different story saying he was following the men and that one of them tried to jump over his vehicle, but hit the hood instead. Ferguson said that's when the two men ran to the mall.

The unidentified "girlfriend" told police that she had given Green a ride last Thursday and when she went to the bathroom he took off with the car. She did not report it stolen.

Green said not true. Instead, he claims the woman lent him the car and he was on his way to return it when the incident occurred, Butler said.

Police arrested both Green and Ferguson, Butler said.

Green was charged with larceny and conspiracy to commit larceny and was held in lieu of a $25,000 bond.

Ferguson was charged with assault and released after posting a $500 bond.

The woman and the cousin were not charged.
