At around 7 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, Detective Sgt. Adam Marcus came upon the accident that had just occurred in the area of 65 Ball Pond Road. He was joined in the rescue by two motorists, identified as 32-year-old Chris Dimauro of Danbury and 28-year-old Danielle Lo Medico of Danbury.
The three saw a silver Jeep Liberty partially submerged on its side in the pond, about 50 feet from the shoreline, police said.
They quickly realized that there was an injured teen girl trapped inside the Jeep, and all three went into the water to help her. The rescuers were able to free her from the Jeep and bring her to shore, stabilizing her until medical emergency personnel arrived.
The 17-year-old was driving the Jeep south on Ball Pond Road when she lost control, striking a telephone pole and several guard posts until it ended up in the water, police said. She was taken to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the accident, and issued a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.
"The Danbury PD is proud of the three individuals who rescued a teenager from her partially submerged vehicle," the department said in a statement. "Off-duty Danbury Police Officer Sgt. Adam Marcus observed the vehicle off the road and in a pond. Sgt. Marcus, with the assistance of good Samaritans Chris DiMauro, a captain of a Danbury Volunteer Fire Company, and Danielle Lo Medico, quickly entered the water and rescued the injured driver. Danbury PD is glad we have brave people like these in our communities."
