BROOKFIELD, Conn. -- Stephen Harding has announced he is seeking his second term as a state representative for the 107th District, and the Republican said he is focusing on reducing taxes and spurring job creation.

"We're in trying times here in the state of Connecticut, there are a lot of issues we are facing locally and at the state level in regards to tax burdens and in regards to individuals leaving the state," he said. "I want to be the advocate for them up in Hartford to make sure they can stay in the state, that they no longer have such a heavy tax burden and the senior citizens can enjoy their remaining years here and the young professionals can grow their families here."

Harding's district includes Brookfield and parts of Bethel and Danbury. He serves on the Finance Revenue and Bonding, Energy and Technology and the Joint Judiciary committees.

Harding, 28, defeated Democrat Howard Lasser in a special election in 2015 to fill the empty seat. Longtime state Rep. David Scribner, a Republican from Brookfield, took a job with the state Liquor Control Commission in January, 2015, just days after beginning his ninth term in the state legislature.

"We have to find more efficient ways to operate our state government and we have to find the ways to reduce the tax burden upon our residents so they can stay here," Harding said.

He also said he is going to fight for more autonomy for municipalities from state control and mandates.

"I'm a firm believer that the residents of our local towns know what is best for them and their fellow residents," he said.

After graduating from Brookfield High School he attended Albertus Magnus College, where he was a four-year varsity player and graduated summa cum laude in 2009. He earned his law degree at New York Law School in Manhattan in 2012, was admitted to the Connecticut Bar and currently practices as an associate attorney at the Law Offices of Dean L. Lewis.

Harding has served the town of Brookfield in various capacities, including as a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals and currently is a member of the Board of Education.
