RIDGEFIELD, Conn. — A massive Georgian-style estate in Ridgewood was sold on Thursday, just hours before it was scheduled to hit the auction block.

The purchase price of the estate was not disclosed, but the home was listed for $5.57 million prior to being offered without reserve for the auction.

Sunset Hill was built and owned by U.S. Ambassador and banker James Stoker in 1912.

Since then it has had several other prestigious owners including the brother of Harry Houdini,Brooklyn multi-millionaire and beer baron Samuel Rubel and "The Man from UNCLE" actor Robert Vaughn.

Sunset Hall was even considered as the permanent home of the United Nations in 1946.

The estate sits on seven acres. The main residence boasts nearly 12,000 square feet, while a separate guesthouse adds 1,500 square feet. Property features include a tennis court, 65-foot heated pool, a 4,000 square foot limestone pool terrace, 9 fireplaces, a marble-floored, 50-ft ballroom, formal dining and a gourmet kitchen.

Sunset Hill has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1984.
