"Severe drought" conditions that existed less than a month ago across much of Connecticut have been downgraded to a "moderate drought" in most of Fairfield County, according to the National Weather Service.

The amount of Connecticut that is still under a "severe drought" has noticeably shrunk. Parts of eastern Connecticut are even listed as just "abnormally dry" or even as normal.

The map above shows the before and after conditions from just March to April.

Rain made up for a lot of lost ground across Fairfield County after several heavy storms passed through the area in March and early April, the National Weather Service said.

The conditions could improve even more Wednesday when showers and thunderstorms are possible.

There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 a.m. Wednesday and continuing through mid-afternoon. Wednesday's high temperature will be in the mid-60s across Fairfield County.

In Norwalk, Mayor Harry Rilling has declared the city's water emergency is over.

"Due to recent rain and snow storms, we have reached out to the First District Water Company and South Norwalk Electric and Water companies and found that they are now at, or close to, capacity," the city said in a statement Tuesday.

Rilling thanked Norwalk residents for their cooperation in conserving water in recent months. He also urged common sense in water usage as we head into summer.

Aquarion Water Co. said a sprinkler irrigation ban continues for customers in Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan and Stamford due to lower than normal reservoir levels.
