Ginger Beer is a soft drink that has been brewed in England for at least 200 years.

Reed’s Inc makes soda the old fashioned way. It brews each batch of Reed’s, Virgil’s & Flying Cauldron naturally. "You can taste the difference!" the company proclaims on Twitter.

The California ginger beer maker sold a Los Angeles production plant and is undertaking a hiring push in its executive suite, according to this report by The Hour.

Reed’s has sold more than 500 million bottles of soda since its launch in the late 1980s, with the company claiming top market share for Reed’s ginger beer and rising sales of Virgil’s root beer and Flying Cauldron butterscotch beer.

The company’s sodas are sold in more than 30,000 retail outlets nationally that include Stop & Shop, the largest grocery chain in southwestern Connecticut with more than 50 supermarkets.

Following the sale of the West Coast plant, Reed’s Inc. said it hopes the Norwalk move will accelerate its transition from a soda production mentality to a marketing focus, according to The Hour report, citing the Hudson Valley region’s cluster of major beverage companies including PepsiCo in Purchase, Nestle Waters in Stamford and Diageo in Norwalk.

Westport was once home to Affinity Beverages, which is now based on Long Island and sells a rival ginger beer under the Regatta brand.

“The strategy is to transform from a capital-intensive, self-production model to an asset-light, sales-and-marketing-driven enterprise,” Reed's Chief Executive Officer Val Stalowir said in May.

Stalowir was named CEO in June 2017, with founder Chris Reed becoming chief innovation officer.

Stalowir previously headed International Harvest, an organic food company based in Mount Vernon, after working for Coca-Cola.
