New York Air National Guard Staff Sgt. Todd "T.J." Lobraico Jr. died in 2013 from wounds suffered from an enemy attack on his unit near Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan. He was 22.

Seeking to honor the hero, who was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor in 2015, Lobraico's family and friends began Live for TJ -- The TJ Lobraico Foundation, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to "provide educational scholarships or support to people and organizations who exemplify service before self."

The 2016 Breakout Run kicked off at Stop & Shop in New Fairfield on May 21 and included a scenic motorcycle ride. On Facebook, the event's organizers expressed their gratitude.

"A long overdue thank you to all those who supported the 3rd Annual Breakout Run held in honor of TJ," they said in a post on the Live for TJ page. "We'd especially like to thank Doug DiSarro, Fran O'Toole Watson, Lou Smith, Pam Fairchild, Patricia Pinto Fiore, the 440 Line Restaurant and the Town of New Fairfield."

The $7,000 raised during the event will benefit the Staff Sgt. T.J. Lobraico Scholarship Fund.
