The council is a body of corporate and national organizations convened to elevate ALICE’s voice to a national level. United Way identifies ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) as people who, in many cases, work multiple jobs but cannot make ends meet. The council provides a forum for sharing experiences, developing best practices and building innovative strategies to stabilize ALICE households. Its goals include the following:

  • Stimulating national dialogue, raising awareness and consciousness of this issue.
  • Strengthening and unifying organizations supporting ALICE.
  • Inspiring action (corporate policy, public policy and individual action)
  • Engaging new entities, with varying perspectives, to strengthen the efforts around ALICE.

“We are thrilled that Kim has been named to this council,” said Cynthia Merkle, chair of the local United Way's board of directors. “Her appointment is a testament to the work that United Way of Western Connecticut has done in the past two years to increase awareness of households in our communities living paycheck to paycheck. We know Kim will add to this national discussion and learn a great deal from her involvement on this council. Her participation will ultimately benefit our communities through leveraging of resources to address challenges faced by this population.”

The council includes members from the following corporations: Aetna Foundation, Atlantic Health System, AT&T, Deloitte, Entegy, Johnson & Johnson, KeyBank, Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, OneMain Financial and UPS.
